Chicago Hip-Hop Group BBU Assaults Cyclist in Wicker Park

Members of the Chicago hip-hop group BBU are accused of assaulting a cyclist, Matthew McNeill, in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. The incident occurred around 1:45AM early Thursday morning. McNeill was leaving his job as a bouncer at popular Wicker Park bar the Flat Iron when a vehicle pulled up alongside him as he rode his bike home. A door on the passenger side of the vehicle was opened in front of McNeill, slamming the cyclist off his bike and into the curb on the side of the road. Witnesses then report seeing members of up and coming hip-hop group BBU (Bin Laden Blowin’ Up) exit the vehicle where they proceeded to punch, kick and spit on McNeill as he lay in the street. The group then returned to their vehicle and sped-off into the night.

The assault stems from an incident earlier in the week. In the early morning hours on Tuesday, June 22nd at around 3:00AM BBU member Mike “Illekt” Milam was seen standing in front of the Flat Iron, drinking a beer on the sidewalk in front of the bar. He was asked to vacate the premises but refused to do so, at which point McNeill forcibly removed Milam. An altercation ensued in which Milam was knocked to the ground.

“This guy was drinking a beer in front of the bar, and he wouldn’t quit drinking his beer. He said ‘Fuck you’ or something like that so I pushed him, and went back into the bar. I come back out and he was yelling ‘I’m in a gang I’m going to fucking kill you’”. McNeill says of the incident that happened Tuesday morning.

In regards to the assault that occurred on Thursday morning McNeill states the following: “I was outside smoking a cigarette when I saw Mike Milam and the guys in his band, and he pointed me out to them. I had just gotten off work, had a few drinks, and was riding my bike to the liquor store. A car pulled up to me and hit me with the door, cornered me and knocked me off my bike. This was right in front of Skewers on Damen across from the Blue Line stop. They knock me off my and bike and one guy gets out and says something about “you’re fucking with so-and-so” we have words. I got knocked down, there was a tall curb, I got knocked down into the street so I couldn’t get up over the curb. They had me down, kicking me and punching me and spitting on me. It was two of the members of BBU, not Mike, he stood there and laughed, I don’t even think he even hit me once. He spit on me, they all were spitting on me. While he was spitting on me I was yelling ‘you’re a pussy, you can’t take me by yourself so you’re having your friends do it’ basically telling him to fight me one on one which he wouldn’t.”

“They held me down, they stomped on my head and kicked me in the face. I have a knot on the left side of my head, my ribs are cut up.”

Witnesses called the police and reported the car’s license plate number. As of yet no arrests have been made.

BBU got their start around early 2007 in Chicago’s underground hip-hop scene. Over the past three years the group has risen steadily, attracting attention across the country with their house inspired beats and quasi-political lyrics. They’ve been featured twice on Pitchfork.com’s Forkcast, they’ve been written about in Time Out Chicago, the New York Times and the Washington Post. BBU was named Chicago’s Best New Musical Group by the Chicago Reader this year.

While doing research on BBU the one point that keeps on coming up is their “politically conscious” lyrics. Much praise has been heaped on BBU for not being another “part-rap” group. Riding this wave of accolades has landed them a spot opening up for legendary hip-hop pioneers Public Enemy at the Congress Theatre this upcoming Saturday, June 26th.

Although they would like to be portrayed as an intelligent, activist band, the actions of BBU in regards to the alleged assault on Thursday would suggest otherwise. The members of the band, Mike “Illekt” Milam, Jasson Perez and Richard “Epic” Wallace are accused of using a car to run a cyclist of the road where they proceed to exit their vehicle and beat said cyclist. It was three guys ganging up on one, which as far as I can tell goes right along with the thug hip-hop mentality that they’re supposed to be the antithesis of. Not only did they assault McNeill, but the incident that the assault stems from the fact McNeill ejected Milam for drinking on the sidewalk in front of the bar where McNeill works. Essentially BBU attacked McNeill for doing his job.

I e-mailed both BBU’s management and Public Enemy requesting a statement in regards to the alleged incident. Neither one of which has replied thus-far.

In reflecting on the incident McNeill said the following :

“It’s the gang mentality of you can’t fight by yourself. You’re not a man, so you have to get together with other people to beat some up. It’s cowardice.”

  3. Wow. To truly embody a stereotype like that... how exhausting these puesdo intellectual rappers must be. I hope police follow up and charges are filed.

  4. Pussies. They just fucked up their whole career over some stupid shit. Fucking idiots. Get well soon, Matt!

  5. Someone should start a Facebook group to boycott the Public Enemy show tomorrow night. I would do it now, but am running out the door...

  6. I have met these individuals on multiple occasions and I cannot imagine the above mentioned events happening. This sounds blown way out of proportion and filled with a bit of sensationalism. All in all I do not condone violence in any way and I wish Matthew a speedy and healthy recovery.

I notice a lot of harsh comments above. From what I have heard many of the members of BBU are active members in their communities. I also notice a lot of "Anonymous" responders...

  7. What's so fucked up is that these pussies had obviously planned this thing during the 48 hours or so leading up to the Thursday morning incident. Did they not think at any point, 'Wow, our careers might be over with if we go through with this.'? Fucking idiots. Those guys are going to have huge targets on them. They essentially cannot hang out in Wicker Park any longer. The Flat Iron crew is just too deep. Those guys fucked themselves on so many levels. They might be better off in jail with respect to their safety.

  8. I agree with Brad. How about not jumping to conclusions until all the facts are in?

  9. I know all of these dudes.. none of them are fighters. Bouncers aren't legally allowed to put hands on anyone for any reason. It's not BBU that looks stupid from this report.

    ReplyDelete
  10. It doesn't matter whether or not a bouncer is allowed to put his hands on someone or not. the guys in BBU hunted the kid down and then beat him up.

also it's completely fucked up for someone to use their car as a weapon against a cyclist.

i don't care if you know these dudes or not, they're assholes and you're probably an asshole too.

    ReplyDelete
  11. First off none of us know the true story. Everyone needs to calm down and also if it was the beating that was said the bbu dudes would be in jail this whole situation seems blown out of the water for no reason. There is a ton of beatings and killings that happen in chicago every day but no one says anything or blogs about that.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hey Brad, and who ever else knows these assholes; what exactly is their side of the story?

    ReplyDelete
  13. to the guy two posts ahead of me- if there are beatings and killings in chicago every day then shouldn't SOMEONE make a big deal about it?

maybe we'd be better off if more people did take this shit seriously instead of just dismissing it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. yeah, they'd be in jail because the chicago cops are so well known for doing their job...

    ReplyDelete
  15. the only reason anyone is making a big deal about this is because they are on the verge of blowing up and yes i agree that we should talk about the beatings and killings that happen in chicago. I am just saying everyone likes to talk when they don't know the true story. I am sure both parties are at fault not just one.

    ReplyDelete
  16. how can you condone 3 guys beating up 1?

    ReplyDelete
  17. on the verge of blowin' up....bin laden!

    see what i did there?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Why yes indeed I did.

    And I even liked it!

    ReplyDelete
  19. So have the guys in BBU said anything at all about this yet?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Let's ask Matt how many times he's beat up a drunk while working. It's Karma ..if his attitude and head was in the right place none of this would have happened in the first place.

And from Matt's friend on the other thread:

i know matt and the reason the guy was got pushed to the ground is because matt was trying to leave and go home. so "illekt" or whatever stupid name the guy goes by got in his face as he was leaving.

  21. Have you ever worked as a bouncer? It's rough work. Dealing with drunks looking to start fights, people doing drugs in the bathroom, underage kids trying to get in with fake IDs and all kinds of nonsense every night.

So after a hard night of dealing with all that shit the guy just wants to go home and some drunk asshole wants to start shit because of what he was doing while working? Well I'd have pushed the fucker out of my way too.

  22. I'm a bouncer and I agree with the guy that said it's karma. You kids need to grow up.

    ReplyDelete
  25. clearly BBU has the most intelligent and well-spoken fan base in the city...

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think it's absolutely astounding what's going on with these comments. This isn't about Flat Iron's crew or BBU's crew, this is about a group of people in a car threatening the life of someone on a bicycle. It doesn't matter what bar someone works at or what band someone's in, this is about the responsibility of operating a vehicle.

When someone uses a car as weapon against a cyclist that person should be charged with assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder. Simple as that. When and there's an altercation that involves a bike vs. car the car is the one who wins. They could have easily maimed and killed him, and over what exactly? Some nonsense that happened outside of a bar? That's really worth nearly running someone over? Really?

And to the people who think BBU's got this huge base of support:
You've got nothing on this city's cycling community. We're here and we're on the road; so you better watch out for us.

  27. This is terrible journalism- no witnesses quoted, no police comment on a supposedly serious crime, the only source a self-admitted bully who beat on someone in a situation 100% out of the scope of his job. This is not a news item, it's an op-ed masquerading as news. If I was the gentleman pushed down by the bouncer illegally, I would take that bouncer to court. If I was BBU I would sue this site and the author of this garbage for libel.

    ReplyDelete
  28. umm...where did the guy who got beat up by THREE PEOPLE ever say he was a bully. you know, that's a pretty important part of "self-admitted"

    ReplyDelete
  29. got pushed down by the bouncer illegally, and then goes and gets his buddies to beat up the bouncer. yeah, these guys are worth defending all right.

if the guy had gone to the police in the first place this would never have happened and no one would be talking about it. instead he decided to go ahead and make things much worse.

  30. everyone involved in this discussion is stupid. wah wah wah, people are getting into fights. grow up. no gives a fuck about what happens to a bunch hipsters anyway.

  31. bbu sucks. flat iron sucks. bike riding hipsters suck. this blog sucks and anyone who considers this "news" or "journalism" is an idiot.

    suck my cock and die.

  32. exactly why am i supposed to care about a rap group i've never heard of beating up some guy from a bar i'll never go to again?

oh, that's right, i'm not supposed to care.

now back to what the internet's good for: porn.

  33. I will boycot this band a nd put notice to the great folks of some important people those asshole fuckers

  34. I posted one of the anonymous comments above. To the person who personally met these people and could not imaginne them doing such a thing, there is something that is called "gang mentality" as well as something that is called "intoxication". Alot of people have issues with people on bikes as well as issues with people who are in positions of power. The bouncer was doing his job, and BBU sounds as if they had a big car, as well as a group presence to react. I think these young rappers have not made a name for themselves as of yet in my book. Their pr. seems to be good though, but I am sure it will be updated with this incident.

    ReplyDelete
  35. So they used a car as a weapon then beat a guy and there are morons defending them and trashing a bouncer for doing his job. What a bunch of dim witted fuck heads.

Do you know why you would, as a bouncer, tell some idiot to not drink in front of the bar? Cause the bar will lose it's liquor license. That's his job, see idiot breaking rule, get rid of idiot.

These "activists" seem like nothing more than common thugs. Throw the book at 'em! Have fun bein' activists behind bars.

    gabe

  36. Dude who wrote all in caps: Either you are a troll or you honestly deserve to (and probably will) get shot and die. You obviously have no understand of how the real world works. You don't make the rules, and the world doesn't revolve around you. Keep running your mouth you ignorant fuck. And please like you keep the flat iron in business, I mean you do realize your "argument" that no one can stop your precious stereotypical wanna be thugs from making it is exactly the same as saying in the next sentence that you're going to prevent people from going to the flat iron. No you probably don't understand, you ignorant fuck.

And for the ignorant morons who want to argue that this isn't news. YOU ARE RIGHT! IT'S A FUCKING BLOG! Way to point out the fucking obvious. What a great argument, you fucking cunts.

Gee, ganging up on people is so bad ass. Especially when they are on a bicycle. It really shows just how awesome your group is, I mean just look at CMS and the 77s. They have such pride for the city, and respect for the everyday people in it.

    Go die.

It was not a "deliberate assault on a cyclist." What a dishonest spin on the situation! These kids didn't just jump some cyclist! Someone picked a fight with a kid, he got his friends and fought back. It sounds like all parties were drinking. This is hardly news worthy! Get over yourself. And maybe your friend will think twice before muscling kids around.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yes it was a deliberate assault on a cyclist. They used their car as a weapon. There's no getting around that no matter who was drinking.

And if they were drinking they shouldn't have been operating a vehicle.

  43. 1. a bouncer is legally aloud to forcefully remove an intoxicated and\or violent patron from outside or inside a bar. talk to the 14th about that.
    2. i bet the flatiron is not concerned with losing revenue from any shithead patrons. i highly doubt they'll lose any melvins or maiden fans because these shit sucken bbu douche bags will get their teeth stomped in if they step foot on the flatirons property.

  44. • Attention * I’m choosing to stay anonymous unless this situation isn’t resolved. I Live directly across the street from where this alleged “Beating” took place. I witnessed the entire thing and every thing I am reading is insane. You are lighting a flame that can potentially Lead to More Fights and the possibility of some one being Murdered and I cant let that happen. It was no a gang Beating. The cyclist was standing with his bike talking to friend when a car pulled up and three people got out of the car and approached him. The cyclist was never struck by the car!!!! They exchanged words and the little guy wrestled the cyclist to the ground the other two just stood there. Then as the little guy let him go. They exchanged words again and the tall white guy from the car and the cyclist exchanged blows and the tall white kid was the victor. The third guy the African American never even touched the cyclist. If any thing he tried to break it up and potentially saved this kids ass. Then they got back in the car and drove away. Point blank. You should all be ashamed of your selves. I’m not defending these kids fight are wrong, but they happen, what you are saying happened is Lie. OH and if by gang mentality you mean they were people of color then I will make all the necessary appeals to ensure this blog is shut down. I have contacted the CPD and I will testify in court to exactly what I saw. I will also be in contact with the Alderman in this Ward in concerns to Flat Iron. I hope this doesn’t have to go any further and that no one gets hurt on the biases of a lie.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Obviously I don't know what happened that night, since I wasn't a witness to the event so I've got nothing to say on that point.

BUT this right here: "OH and if by gang mentality you mean they were people of color then I will make all the necessary appeals to ensure this blog is shut down." Complete bullshit. Never in the story does it even point out the race of anyone involved. The story (and once again we don't know the REAL FACTS) simply states that it was a three guys against one guy. That's why it's a gang mentality. Race was never brought into this until the above commenter brought it up. And it's completely disgusting to try and accuse someone of racism without reason.

    ReplyDelete
  46. So far I've stayed off the comments section, mainly because I feel that it's not really my place to comment on something that I posted; I prefer to just let the post speak for itself.

Having said that, I feel that I need to directly respond to commenter two posts above me:

This is the first person who has come out other than those that I spoke to (McNeill and two witnesses who didn't want to be identified) who has claimed to have seen the altercation that night. You've seen McNeill's account, the other two people I talked to claimed to have seen the car pull alongside Matt and door him. They were also the ones who identified those involved as being members of BBU. I simply took down what they had to say and put it up in the post. If it turns out that I was lied to, well that sucks, but I have never intentionally tried to mislead anyone with anything I've written thus far.

Continuing on, I find it odd that no one from BBU has said anything in response to this. If I was accused of doing something that I didn't do I wouldn't wait to clear my name up. I e-mailed their manager before I posted this and still have yet to receive a response. I would love nothing more than to hear their side of the story.

Finally I want to address the completely unfounded accusations of this having anything to do with race. I want to say I really appreciate the above commenter for pointing out that I never even mentioned anyone's race in the original post. The commenter two posts above this one is the only person thus far who has brought up anybody's race in this incident so far. They seem pretty fixated on it in fact; referring to the "white guy" and the "African-American guy". From my point of view it doesn't matter the color of someone's skin, but the actions that they're accused of. I never brought anyone's race into this, because I didn't feel like it makes any difference what color someone is, violence is violence if you're white, black, brown or yellow. I didn't even use the phrase "gang-mentality" other than in a direct quote. I also don't see how using that phrase implies anything about anybody's race, unless it's the commenter who automatically associates the word "gang" with people of color.

You can say what you want about my blog, my writing, but when you come out and accuse me of racism without a shred of evidence to back you up I'm going to take offense. It's completely uncalled for and just serves as a distraction from the real issue here. If you want to come out and say that you witnessed the altercation and the situation is being portrayed as something other than what took place, fine, go ahead. But if you're making completely baseless accusations of something as serious as racism, well you've degraded the entire tenure of the conversation and are only serving as a distraction from the truth.

  47. I was hanging out with Mike "Illekt" on monday when the first altercation happened, and there was ALOT that was left out. That night Matt was in the wrong, and was out of line. Jumping Matt wasn't the right way to get back at dude, but i will say Matt had something coming to him after what happened that monday night.
